Synopsis: ABOUT 6:45 A.M., CENTRAL STANDARD TIME, ON NOVEMBER 19, 1988, A GREYHOUND BUS WITH 45 OCCUPANTS, TRAVELING SOUTH BOUND THROUGH A CONSTRUCTION ZONE ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 65 IN NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE, SUDDENLY WENT OUT OF CONTROL DURING A STEERING MANEUVER, ROTATED 190 DEGREES CLOCKWISE IN THE SOUTHBOUND LANES, OVERTURNED ON ITS LEFT SIDE, AND CAME TO REST FACING NORTHBOUND ON THE SOUTHBOUND EMBANKMENT. THE UNRESTRAINED BUS DRIVER AND 38 PASSENGERS WERE INJURED IN THE ACCIDENT. TWELVE PASSENGERS SUSTAINED SERIOUS INJURIES, AND THE BUS DRIVER AND 26 PASSENGERS RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES. SIX PASSENGERS WERE NOT INJURED.
Recommendation: THE NTSB RECOMMENDS THAT GREYHOUND LINES, INC.: INSTITUTE A PROGRAM TO EDUCATE COMPANY BUS DRIVERS ABOUT THE NEED FOR PROPER NOURISHMENT WHILE ON DUTY AND ALSO TO EDUCATE BOTH BUS DRIVERS AND THEIR FAMILIES ABOUT THE STRESSES IMPOSED BY NIGHT WORK AND SHIFT WORK, AS WELL AS THE ADVERSE EFFECT THESE STRESSES CAN HAVE ON SAFE JOB PERFORMANCE.

Response: Safety Recommendation H-89-30 asked Greyhound to institute a program to educate company bus drivers about the need for proper nourishment while on duty and also to educate both bus drivers and their families about the stresses imposed by night work and shift work. The Safety Board has reviewed Greyhound's driver training video, "Fuel for Thought," plus the accompanying facilitator's manual, questionnaire, and sample diet plan. We also understand that Greyhound is producing an in-service driver training video concerning proper exercise and stress reduction. Based on Greyhound's efforts to establish a proper nourishment and stress reduction education program, Safety Recommendation H-89-30 has been classified as "Closed-- Acceptable Action."

Response: Safety Recommendation H-89-30 asked Greyhound to institute a program to educate company busdrivers about the need for proper nourishment while on duty and also to educate both busdrivers and their families about the stresses imposed by night work and shift work. The Safety Board understands that your company is not presently in a position to institute a formal education program on proper nourishment, but that efforts are underway to use company bulletin boards and driver meetings to stress the influence of proper nourishment and eating habits on safe job performance. We would appreciate receiving a further response on this recommendation and progress reports from your safety department on the development of a proper nourishment education program for busdrivers. Pending further response, Safety Recommendation H-89-30 will be classified as "Open--Acceptable Alternate Response."
