Details
Synopsis: BURLINGTON NORTHERN EXTRA 5701 EAST, APPROACHING SHERIDAN YARD SHERIDAN, WYOMING, ON THE MORNING OF MARCH 28, 1971, CALLED THE YARD OFFICE FOR A TRACK ON WHICH TO DELIVER THE TRAIN. THE MAIN TRACK WAS ASSIGNED, BUT AS THE APPROACH WAS CONTINUED, CARS WERE SIGHTED STANDING ON THE MAIN TRACK. THE CARS WERE SIGHTED TOO LATE. THE TRAIN DID NOT STOP, AND THERE WAS A COLLISION. THE ENGINEER AND FIREMAN WERE KILLED, TWO BRAKEMEN WERE INJURED, AND THREE DIESEL UNITS AND ELEVEN CARS WERE DERAILED.
Recommendation: THE NTSB RECOMMENDS THAT THE BURLINGTON NORTHERN: RE-APPRAISE ITS PERSONNEL TRAINING AND QUALIFICATION PRACTICES AND THE ASSIGNMENT OF DUTIES TO EMPLOYEES, AND TAKE CORRECTIVE ACTION WHERE WARRANTED.
