Board Meeting : Highway Accident - School bus and truck crash, Chesterfield, NJ
Washington, DC
7/23/2013 9:30 AM

On Tuesday, July 23, 2013, 9:30 am EST, the NTSB Board will meet to consider a Highway Accident Report regarding the following:

On February 16, 2012, a school bus transporting 25 students was traveling northbound on Burlington County Road 660 through an intersection. At the same time, a Mack roll-off truck with a fully loaded dump container was traveling east on BCR 528, approaching the same intersection. As the school bus proceeded across the intersection, the truck collided with the left rear of the bus. The crash killed one student on the school bus. Five students were seriously injured, 10 students and the bus driver sustained minor injuries, and nine students were uninjured. The truck driver was not injured.

The Board will also be hearing information regarding a crash that occurred in Port St. Lucie, Florida on March 26, 2012 in which a school bus was hit by a truck-tractor semitrailer. As a result of the crash, one student passenger was fatally injured, four sustained serious injuries and twelve others were transported to the hospital. Due to the similarities between the Port St. Lucie, Florida and Chesterfield, New Jersey crashes, school bus occupant protection issues from both crashes will be reviewed and the Board will consider possible recommendations to improve school bus safety nationwide.

NTSB public events are also streamed live via webcast. Webcasts are archived for a period of three months from the time of the meeting. Webcast archives are generally available by the end of the event day for public Meetings, and by the end of the next day for Technical conferences.
