On January 14, 2024, about 1015 eastern standard time, the Singapore-flagged bulk carrier Hafnia Amessi was transiting the Cooper River near Charleston, SC, when it struck Joint Base Charleston—Naval Weapons Station Pier B. No pollution or injuries were reported at the time of the incident. Initial damage assessments for the vessel were under $500,000, and the initial damage assessment for the pier exceeded $3 million.
The US Coast Guard has declared this incident a major marine casualty. The Coast Guard will lead the investigation, and the NTSB will investigate and determine the probable cause.
