Flooding and Sinking of Passenger Vessel Jig Strike

What Happened

​On August 31, 2024, about 1035 local time (Pacific daylight time), the small passenger vessel Jig Strike was about 100 nm west of San Diego, California, on a chartered fishing trip when it suddenly began taking on water. The 12 passengers and 5 crewmembers on board evacuated to a life raft and were rescued by a nearby vessel. The Jig Strike eventually sank. There were no injuries, and no pollution was reported. Damages were estimated at $650,000.

The Coast Guard has declared this incident a major marine casualty. The Coast Guard will lead the investigation, and the NTSB will investigate and determine the probable cause.
