WASHINGTON (April 1, 2025) —The National Transportation Safety Board will hold an in-person public board meeting April 15 to determine the probable cause of the fire aboard the roll-on/roll-off container vessel Grande Costa D’Avorio in Newark, New Jersey.
On
July 5, 2023, the Grande Costa D’Avorio was docked at Port Newark, New Jersey, when a pusher vehicle operated by shoreside workers, who were moving cargo on an interior vessel garage deck, caught on fire. While attempting to put out the fire, two land-based firefighters got lost in one of the smoke-filled garage decks and died. Six additional emergency responders were injured during the firefighting and rescue operations.
During the meeting the NTSB’s board will vote on the findings, probable cause and safety recommendations as well as any changes to the draft final report.
