​Glossary

  • ​Accident: An occurrence associated with the operation of an aircraft that takes place between the time any person boards th​e aircraft with the intention of flight and all such persons have disembarked, and in which any person suffers death or serious injury, or in which the aircraft receives substantial damage, as defined in Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 830.2​​. Accidents involving intentional acts (such as suicide, sabotage, stolen aircraft, or terrorism) are included in accident counts but are excluded from accident rate computations.​
  • ​ Defining Event​​: One event occurring in an aircraft accident sequence that is used to categorize the accident type. Defining event categories were developed by the Commercial Aviation Safety Team (CAST)/International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Common Taxonomy Team (CICTT).
  • ​​General Aviation: All US civil aviation operations except those conducted under Part 121 air carrier operations or Part 135 commuter and on-demand operations; ​this primarily includes noncommercial operations regulated by 14 CFR​ Part 91​.​​
  • Part 121: Air carrier operations involving airplanes with a passenger-seat configuration of more than nine passenger seats or, in the case of cargo operations, airplanes having a payload capacity of more than 7,500 pounds. These operations are regulated by 14 ​CFR Part 121.
  • Part 135​: Commuter and on-demand operations not meeting the passenger seat or payload requirements of Part 121. These operations are regulated by 14 CFR Part 135​.
  • Phase of Flight: The phase of flight shown is that associated with the defining event. Phase of flight categories were developed by the CICTT.​​
  • US Civil Aviation: Flight operations ​​with US registered aircraft, excluding military operations.​
