This information is preliminary and subject to change.

On June 18, 2023, about 1740 eastern daylight time, the US Coast Guard was notified that the 21-foot-long submersible Titan had not returned to the Canadian research vessel Polar Prince, which was on station about 900 nautical miles east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The Titan had submerged at 0800 earlier that day with five persons on board and was scheduled to surface in the afternoon after viewing the wreckage of the Titanic, but the Polar Prince lost contact with the submersible about 1 hour and 45 minutes into its voyage. On June 22, about 1500, the Coast Guard announced that the Titan’s tail cone and additional debris had been found. All five persons on board are presumed dead.

The US Coast Guard has declared this incident a major marine casualty. The Coast Guard will lead the investigation, and the NTSB will investigate and establish the probable cause of the casualty.
