Fire aboard Roll-on Roll-off Containership Grande Costa D’Avorio

On July 5, 2023, about 2145 eastern daylight time, a fire was reported on board the 692-foot-long roll-on roll-off containership Grande Costa D’Avorio, which was docked in the Port of Newark, New Jersey, and loaded with vehicles. The crew and responders evacuated the vessel due to high temperatures. ​​The fire burned for several days before being extinguished. Two shoreside firefighters died, and six were injured. An oil sheen about 30 feet by 40 feet was reported.

The US Coast Guard has declared this incident a major marine casualty. The Coast Guard will lead the investigation, and the NTSB will investigate and establish the probable cause of the casualty.
